Knitting Circles

If you have never attended a knitting circle, I highly recommend that you do so IMMEDIATELY (or as soon as the opportunity presents itself). Knitting circles really are as cool as the novels portray. No matter how different your lives are, you instantly have something in common with all these other people who love knitting as much as you do. Whether you need help with a toe-up sock, exploring new knitting techniques (or refining existing ones), or freeing that nasty tail that wound up in your work when you weren’t paying attention, there is always someone there with a ready answer and a word of encouragement.

Some days, you might be the life of the party. On other days, you might want to just quietly observe the group while you knit. Either way, it’s all good.

Take time out of your crazy life to do something you love with others who love the same thing you do. You never know, you just might find a family.

I’m just learning to knit. I can cast on, knit and bind off. That’s all I know so far. I’ve read about these groups but how do you find one? And are they just in big cities?

Try http://www.stitchnbitch.org. They have lists of groups from all around the country. You might also try your local yarn store, if you have one, or even a chain craft store that offers knitting classes. They may have listings of knitting groups. If not, maybe you could advertise and start one up yourself.

You don’t have to be an experienced knitter to start or attend a knitting group. In our group, everyone learns from everyone else. The less experienced knitters tend to offer just as many tips as the pros do.

Sometimes I am so tired from the work schedule but still need my knitters fix. It’s not what I’m knitting but the fellowship. It’s worth the 18 miles I drive to visit or quietly sit and knit, like you mentioned. Observing and learning from others. Everyone has something they can teach. I learned how to better use my thumb when I’m purling. Much smoother and quicker. If you can’t find a group, why not start one. Find a few knitters, crocheter or any type of needle work. Have a fiber fest and fun, fun fun.
